Can a Virus be Virus to a Virus?
It is usual to get an idea that the virus is a perilous microorganism which can lead us directly to heaven. Ironically, these viruses can even be used to cure many lethal diseases! Maybe the phrase diamond should be cut with diamond works out very well here.With the advancement in technology, the hope that these microorganisms could help us to cure diseases is also advancing. Most of the medical scientists believe that they can serve us as professional genetic carriers. This process of curing diseases by using viruses is called as gene therapy.

Viruses can cause many diseases from the common cold to HIV. But, it is true that these harmful viruses could get us out from many genetic disorders and even some diseases. Recent experiments revealed that HIV (Human Deficiency Virus) can be used to treat two genetic diseases Metachromatic Leukodystrophy and Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome. Atleast 60 million people were invited by the angel of death due to AIDS (disease caused by HIV virus) and it is said that it has no cure. Moreover, measles virus can be used in the treatment of bone cancer. So, how is this possible? Isn't it fatal to use this deadly virus as a weapon to kill other viruses?

We use antibiotics to cure diseases. Due to their excessive usage, viruses have developed resistance to antibodies produced by them. This made scientists to search for alternate sources. It was learnt that these viruses cannot be used directly, but should be manufactured for medical use. In 1919, D. Herelly used them on himself and his companions. After confirming that there are no dangerous effects, this was successfully implemented on a patient suffering from bloody diarrhea and was cured within 24 hours. This procurement resulted in the advancement of various techniques to use viruses as curatives.
The disease causing packages are removed from these viruses and disease curing packages are injected into them. These manufactured viruses are highly reliable due to their efficiency of delivering genetic packages directly to DNA. Stem cells are collected from patients and these manufactured viruses are injected into them and these stem cells are replaced back into the body. These constructed viruses cannot effect the non-deleterious cells as antigens are ousted.
Treating genetic disorders:-
As mentioned before, HIV virus can be used to treat genetic disorders. HIV virus is made free from all the disease causing packs and is carefully manufactured in the stem cells of patients. Scientists at San Raffaele-Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy (TIGET) in Italy were successful in curing 6 children, 3 suffering from metachromatic luekodystrophy and Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome. HIV virus can also be used in the treatment of Alzheimer's and Hemophilia.
Destroying cancer cells:-
Special viruses called as oncolytic viruses are constructed to destroy malignant cells leaving behind normal cells. These viruses act as natural viruses i.e. they use inside cancer cells as hosts and multiply continuously to burst them. Most of the normal cells remain unaffected in this process.

What more even encouraging is that these viruses can even help in developing resistance along with cure in diseases. Herpes virus is used in the treatment of brain cancer. Reovirus, a natural virus produced in human gastric glands can destroy brain cancer cells.
It is found that measles virus when used in massive doses can destroy bone marrow cancer cells. Mayo Clinic in US experimentally tried this on two women who were suffering from multiple myeloma, a type of bone marrow cancer and yielded better progress within 6 weeks.
Treatment of other diseases & mutations:-
Efforts are put forth to treat many diseases such as Parkinson's disease, genetic defects, and many other skin diseases. Even tissue repairing is possible with them. Many mutations can be prevented by these viruses.
Problems with viruses:-
The major problem with viruses is manufacturing. If they are not, we get ended up with various diseases, even new diseases. Moreover, if the genetic material is not placed properly in the DNA, many mutations may occur. Some of the patients were observed to have symptoms of Leukemia during trials of gene therapy. Also, removal of virus after the cure of disease is also important even if the manufactured virus doesn't have any disease causing package.
Approximately 65,000 people are losing their lives due to diseases every day. So, if we use this technology of gene therapy, we can curtail down this number to a larger extent. Let us hope that this happens once or the other day and see this world disease free!
