A Forgotten Birthday!

The house was euphoric. The happiness echoed from every corner. The asbestos roof creaked. A Half-broken entrance door was wide open for all the guests. Marigold garlands crawled their way from one end to another, mango and banana leaves at the doors and a colorful rangoli at the entrance. This was how a MARRIAGE house looked like. Girls dressed in colorful sarees, bustling in chuckles, receiving guests, welcome drinks, and an elaborate breakfast. But this house in a remote village was different yet beautiful, in its own way! Girls dressed in faded sarees, receiving guests with a beaming smile, serving water in mud tumblers and serving poha for breakfast. Sounds like ignorance? But in reality it was a FARMER’S rigorous hardship for 3 years.  His daughter clad in a bright red saree, was getting ready to be the most beautiful bride in one of the corners of that 800sq ft home, secured for privacy by few sarees of her mom tied across the very corner.  The creaking door, the lack of privacy, lack of elaborate dishes - all of these were hardly any reasons for them to frown. They were happy for their daughter, like any other parents.

The groom and his family had just arrived. The groom, handsome-25 year old clad in a dhoti touched his in-laws feet. The groom took his place quite comfortably on the mandap across the sacred fire leaving space for his fiancé to his right. The bride walked in slow mindful steps, each step taking a lifetime of her energy. In minimal jewelry, tucking her hair behind the ear lobe, and her face SANS HAPPINESS. Ceremonies started. Laughter and happiness dissolved in growing sounds of the shehnai and dhol. It was time for the bride and the groom to take vows of marriage in the presence of the holy fire. They circled or took the ‘phere’ and promised to remain with each other during health and sickness. VOWS - TAKEN. DOWRY - TAKEN.  HAPPINESS – DOUBTFUL. Amidst the growing sound of the shehnai and laughter, the bride quietly whispered to herself,” happy birthday to me.” The happiness of her marriage deafened the happiness of her birth – her 11th BIRTHDAY!
