Despite common perception, hypnotism is neither a magic nor a paranormal phenomenon. It is one of the exquisite sciences fascinating the world. Some people think that in hypnosis, the subject will go into a magical sleep and loses control over thyself. Usually, in most of the cases, the subject will be in full control and can wake up at any time they wish to do so.

The word 'hypnosis' is derived from the word 'hypnos' who is Greek God of sleep. There are two types of hypnosis in practice.

1. Trance hypnotism - This type of hypnotism involves taking the subject into a deep trance and helping him/her to overcome their problem. In this hypnosis, the subject has full control over their trance state.

2. Covert hypnotism  - This hypnotism is done without the knowledge of the subject and moreover, subject will lose their control. This is not a recommended method and can yield adverse effects if not done properly.

In this article, we are going to see how to do trance hypnotism.

Hypnotism - how does this work?

To understand this, we must understand about trance states. Trance is a common phenomenon which we experience everyday. We are in a trance ( may be partial) when we watch television, when we are in a deep notion or take the case of sleeping where we dream. Even, while reading these lines, your brain concentrate on the words and forget about the surroundings to some extent. In short, trance is a natural brain wave activity. It varies with our state of mind. When it is relaxed, hypnotism can be done easily.

During a hypnotherapy, a hypnotist will relax the mind of the subject and then takes him/her to a deep trance. He will give suggestions to the unconscious mind of the subject repeatedly until those thoughts are fixed into their minds ( To suggest right solutions for the subject, it may need years of practice). After hypnosis, the subject feel a great sense of relief and happiness.

How to hypnotize someone?

Hypnosis is an excellent way to battle mental disorders, addiction and anxiety.  The first question which strikes our mind when talking about hypnosis is how to hypnotize someone? It is easy to take a person to a trance but it requires years of practice to give effective solution to the unconscious mind.

It is easy to hypnotize someone who is willing to be hypnotized than those who don't believe. Here are some simple steps for the beginners.

1. Let the subject sit in front of you face to face. Make sure that they are sitting comfortably and relaxed.

2. The key here is to relax the subject. So, it is highly important to focus on your tempo and try to speak in a slow, soothing voice. To make them comfortable, start with intros (the trick is for the subject to feel completely comfortable with your voice and the suggestions you are giving them to relax).

3. After building a small conversation, try to shift their attention to different parts of the body and have them deeply relax with each other. Starting from the legs to the head, proceed in an order. Repeat the steps for 2-3 times. Remember, you need to be relaxed to keep your subject relaxed. So, make sure that you are in comfy.

4. Now, ask the subject to place hands on your palm. Ask them to press on your palm instantly while you count from 1 to 3. After that, ask them to press them harder.

5. This is the most crucial step as it makes them feel relaxed and their mind gets off the fact that they are being hypnotized.

6. Slowly, direct them to an unconscious sleep by saying "You are so tired, now you feel your eyes getting drowsy and you are into a deep sleep". The exact words are not important but how you convey your idea is important.

7. Now, repeat the words "Concentrate on their breath- inhale and exhale while you go into a more deeper trance". Repeat these words 2-3 times. Keep in mind that you need to be confident and also you have to maintain your tempo. Usually, this stage can be achieved in 5 minutes.

8. Hypnotism is about giving suggestions to the unconscious mind of the subject. Let's say he has the problem with smoking addiction. Then, you have to bring his thoughts to a conclusion that smoking is injurious to his health. At the end, he himself has to say that.

9. After this step, wake him up in a conventional way by counting from 1-10. If you wake him up suddenly, he may end up with discomfort. So, proceed in a slower, proper way. As their unconscious mind came to a conclusion that smoking damages his health, the tendency to smoke lessens to a greater extent.

You may not achieve all this in a maiden attempt. All you need is practice this repeatedly. Start with your family or your friends. After mastering this technique, you can move on to more advanced methods.

  1. Hypnosis has to be the most hypnotizing word in our language right? It sounds warm and soothing, images of comfy chairs and soft spoken therapist float from the deepest corners of my memories. And I remember the gentle ticks of golden clocks as I suspended my disbelief and open my unabashed unconscious mind to the possibilities that I can do anything and.... oh dang it, I just hypnotized myself. Wait, no, my foot just fell asleep.
