Secrets of the Lost City of Machu Picchu

Haykuykuy! (Welcome in Inca language Quechua). This "lost city" of Machu Pichu is the most magnificent and remnant of the Incas Built at an altitude of 8,000 feet above sea level near Cusco (Peru), this world heritage site stands as a symbol for Inca civilization. Inca engineering is so marvelous that this entire city is that it was built without the use of wheels or iron implements!-it's the most remarkable thing. They built around 600 terraces to prevent the city from sliding and also a kilometer length water supply pipe. It is now one of the wonders of world. Here we look at some of the most interesting secrets of Machu Picchu

Construction- it's a mystery:

Though there are innumerable theories about this "lost city of Incas", none of the could elucidate the enigmatic mysteries behind this city. The first major question which arise here is "why did Incas built the city at such a sequestered site?" (Spanish conquests could not result Machu Picchu wherein many Inca remains were destroyed by them because of its isolation and the emerald forest cover around it).

Incas never used the wheel or any sort of iron implements in a practical manner which makes the theory of its construction sophisticated. In absence of such technology, the massive stones have to be dragged onto top of one another with enormous man power and that too at such altitudes is almost beyond the bounds of possibility. The most acceptable theory is that they must have brought the stones to the mountain top by making inclined surfaces and then lifting the stones by making knobs or grips around them which would be later removed. There are nearly 150 constructions in the city which include many temples, parks and homes built adroitly with excellent drainage systems (were made of rock), channel connections and fountains. We cannot be sure in theorizing how it was built but we can be sure that it is one of the most perfect cities ever built. Archaeologists say that most of the city is constructed underground and yet many secrets are to be revealed.

Credit Card- you can't insert:

Most of the part of Machu Pichu is constructed in classical style of Incas i.e. by polished dry-stone. The stones were very finely laid such that mortar is not necessary and even masonry is so impeccable that we can't even insert a credit card in the gap between them! (they built the city by a technique called ashlar which involves dressing of irregular shaped stones to solid cuboids).

Also, the city was built near the faulty line of the most seismically affected cities of Lima and Cusco. Apart from the exquisite advantages, this age-old city has engineering trump cards of resistance against earthquakes. The stones dance during earthquakes from the gaps and return back to their positions thus protecting the city. Without this, the legendary city would have mixed up in the carnation.

The 'Secret' Door:

The Secret Door found in Machu Picchu

When Thierry Jamin, an archaeologist and explorer found a secret door in Machu Picchu, millions of eyes all over the world gazed with awe to know the facts buried in earth for centuries. Unfortunately, the government of Peru denied permission to complete the excavation process (probably because they might have feared damage of the site due to excavation as some of the previous excavations resulted in demolition of walls).

Thierry gave some interesting explanation regarding the secret door. He said that there exists a tomb (probably that of a king) surrounded by children and a golden staircase which may lead to many more secret passages lie behind the door walls. Also, his tests responded positively to large heaps of metals most probably gold and silver. Did Peru government really feared damage to the site or exploitation?

Machu Picchu is not only the lost city of Incas but also the last city which gives the idea about their life. Yearly, 750,000 tourists visit this Machu Picchu to enjoy the direct representative of Inca culture. Despite our excavations and findings at Machu Picchu, there are many threads of mystery which have to be unwound yet.
