What was the purpose of 'the stonehenge'?

Though Stonehenge is one of the world's most exalted and intuitive monuments of the world, its history still remain in the darkness. It was raised by an astute civilization centuries ago and from then, it remains as a speculation ever centuries. Its construction began probably in 3100 B.C. and was completed in stages by 1600 B.C. (Early records about the Stonehenge dates back to 3028 B.C.) So, why historians had to arrange these massive rocks in such fashion? What is the purpose of this Stone testament?

There are many theories widespread ranging from small myths in the folklore to the make-believe alien 'cock and bull' stories. According to ancient lores, Merlin, a wizard under king Arthur, constructed this Stonehenge for the queen of Britain as a burial place. He brought these stones from Ireland by his magic and piled up in England. However, this story is not up to the mark of believing as transporting stones by magic is absolutely absurd.

Here are some rational explanations for the purpose of its construction.

1. A Burial place:

Probably, the most supportive theory says that this age-old monument was used as a burial place. Recent excavations also unearth the same. 50,000 cremated bone fragments were found in the place which belong to 70 individuals (Previously, not more than a century ago, excavations here resulted human skeletons but then, these were considered unrelated and were re-buried). Interestingly, the excavations resulted skeletons of equal number of men and women also adding up some that of children acting as a strong point that it was a burial place of the elite.

2. Healing powers?

Bluestones( a structure similar to that of Stonehenge) was found at a mile distant from the Stonehenge. In addition to that, Radio active dating reveal that these stone bunches were constructed somewhere around 2500 B.C. but, fascinatingly, charcoal dating reveal the presence of human beings in the place since 7000 B.C. i.e, far earlier than prediction. Do these stones really have healing powers? (it is believed that some stones have healing powers and also some folklore stories say that Stonehenge was used for this purpose). Does these facts depict that there were many such stone circles present and were constructed for healing purposes? It's a mystery.

3. A Celestial lab:

There is an exclusive theory that states that this double-circle might be used as a vantage source for observing the constellations, movement of stars and planets. These estimations might have helped them in the cultivation of the crops, or deciding rituals etc. The scholars of early 18th century observed that the entrance of this giant monument faces the rising Sun exactly during the summer and winter solstices (Every year, these days are celebrated near the Stonehenge). Acoustic phenomenon observed here is also an alluring one.

Many other theories were winded around Stonehenge later as the time proceeded. With the increasing demand for aliens and UFO theories, Stonehenge fell as an easy prey for such conspiracies. Perhaps, the ancient world doesn't want to reveal the truth to us. It just says "It's a secret."
